Over 100 vehicles, banks, petrol pumps, factories set on fire in Karachi

  KARACHI: In rioting after the killing of Benazir Bhutto, more than 100 vehicles, banks, petrol pumps and factories were set on fire in Karachi while five persons were killed and a number of persons wounded.

PIA has cancelled all its flights and the railway officials have suspended the movement of trains.

After Benazir Bhutto was killed in bomb explosion and firing in Rawalpindi, various incidents of violence were seen in Karachi while shops, markets and petrol pumps were closed.

The protesters set a four-storey building on fire in Boat Basin, Clifton whereas a 30-year-old person, Abdul Qadir died in firing in Nazimabad-Orangabad.

Another person, named Ghulam Akbar was killed in firing by unknown persons in Hussain D’silva Town, Shara-e-Noorjehan.

A 32-year-old pedestrian was shot dead by unknown persons in the area of Baghdadi while more than 18 persons were injured in various areas.

Protesters came out in streets and burnt tyres to block roads in various areas including Lyari, Liaquatabad, Nazimabad, Patel Para, Quaidabad, Gizri, Punjab Chowrangi, Shirin Jinnah Colony, Boat Basin, Memon Goth, Gadap Town, Bin Qasim Town, Bakrapiri, Jehangir Road, Mehmoodabad, Dalmia, Pehlwan Goth, Surjani Town, MA Jinnah Road, Lea Market, Malir Halt, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, National Highway, Sohrab Goth and Abul Hasan Isphahani Road.

Over hundred vehicles were burnt in various areas whereas 16 banks were set on fire. These included five in Ghas Mandi, three each in Gul Bahar and Malir, two each in Gulshan-e-Hadeed and SITE and one in Korangi.

Thirteen petrol pumps were set on fire in various areas and the protesters attacked police stations in Zaman Town, Gulistan-e-Jauhar and Memon Goth and burnt the office of the DSP-Sukhan.
