Those speaking against Army should be shot, says Shujaat

Thursday, April 05, 2007

Asim Yasin

ISLAMABAD: President Pakistan Muslim League Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain on Wednesday said that those raising slogans against the Pakistan Army should be shot, because according to him these people were carrying out terrorist activities in the name of freedom of expression and freedom of journalism.

“During my stay in Washington when I heard slogans against an institution of national security on a TV channel I was greatly aggrieved and immediately expressed my concern by telephone to President General Pervez Musharraf,” Shujaat said while addressing party workers here at the PML House. The PML chief returned from the United States after undergoing angioplasty in Washington, DC.

He urged the opposition to desist from politicising a judicial issue. “The confrontation-based politics will not benefit anyone and it is advisable to let the Supreme Judicial Council take its course on the presidential reference against Justice Ifthikar Muhammad Chaudhry,” he added.

Shujaat said, “Doctors have advised me to take rest for the next three weeks but I have returned home to play my due role in safeguarding the larger national interests.” He said that during his stay in the US he remained in close contact with President Musharraf and informed him about the sentiments of the people. “I also held consultations with the party leaders on the issue,” he added.

The ruling party chief said the Supreme Judicial Council, which would take a decision according to the law, is hearing the presidential reference. “We condemned the opposition for politicising a judicial issue and for defaming the institutions of Army and judiciary for political gains,” he added.

He said the PML desired to see a strong judiciary and would continue to extend support for the independence of the judiciary,” he determined. Shujaat described Tuesday’s incident of beating of pro-government lawyers and use of abusive language against Senator Khalid Ranjha by some lawyers as an effort to pressurise the SJC. “Their real purpose is to attack the Supreme Court while pressuring the SJC but they will not succeed,” he added.

The PML chief said both Benazir Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif had interfered in the matters of the judiciary time and again during their respective governments.

He recalled that during Nawaz Sharif’s regime in a meeting for the appointment of chief justice of the Lahore High Court he had advised for the appointment of senior most judges for the position whereas majority in the meeting disagreed because the judge had political differences with the government.
