Briefs Chinese leaders on security issues ISLAMABAD: Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC) General Tariq Majid spent a busy day in Beijing as he met China’s state and military leaders on Tuesday.
General Tariq Majid, who is in China on an official visit for security talks, met Vice President of China Xi Jinping, State Councillor and Defence Minister General Liang Guanglie and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi, said an ISPR news release.
He briefed the Chinese leaders about Pakistan’s efforts to promote peace and security in the region, to counter terrorism and to focus single-mindedly on the economic and social development of the country.
He also briefed the Chinese leaders about the steps taken by Pakistan to build confidence in South Asia and to deescalate tensions in the region, especially in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks in Mumbai.
He said that under the overall framework of strong and resilient bilateral relations, defence cooperation between Pakistan and China was poised to grow further. Such cooperation, he said, would continue to contribute to stability in the region.
The Chinese leaders said that all necessary steps should be taken to promote dialogue and defuse tensions in South Asia. This, they said, was in the interest of the countries of the region as well as international peace and security. They emphasised that the scourge of terrorism must be eliminated through collective efforts. Vice President Xi said China and Pakistan enjoyed a relationship of mutual trust. He said that Sino-Pak strategic, political and economic relations will see substantial growth in future.
Xi and the Majid said that both countries would continue to support each other at international forums. They expressed satisfaction over bilateral cooperation in the field of counter-terrorism. Xi conveyed good wishes of President Hu Jintao to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani.
The chairman JCSC had a detailed exchange of views with Defence Minister General Liang Guanglie on regional situation and security issues. The Chinese defence minister also hosted a dinner in his honour.
The defence minister said that Pakistan and China were all-weather friends. The strong commitment of the political leadership had always given vigour and depth to military-to-military cooperation. The long-term ties of the two armed forces would be strengthened and would continue to move forward, he added.
Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi said that defence cooperation was an important plank of the strategic partnership between Pakistan and China and that both countries would continue to work for the growth of bilateral relations.
China appreciated the measures taken by the government of Pakistan to deal with the consequences of the Mumbai attacks, the foreign minister said. He urged other countries to push for peace and emphasized that maintaining peace was in the interest of India and Pakistan. China would continue to play its constructive role to counsel restraint and engagement in the region, he added.
