Charge-sheet given final shape; to be tabled in parliament this week
By Asim Yasin
ISLAMABAD: The draft of the charge-sheet for the impeachment of President Pervez Musharraf has been finalised and would now be sent to the coalition partners for approval before being tabled in parliament this week.
“The draft has been given the format of a legal document by Minister for Law and Justice Farooq H Naek and it would be sent to the leadership of the coalition partners by Monday or Tuesday, before it is tabled in parliament,” Information Minister Sherry Rehman told the media after a meeting of the joint PPP-PML-N committee here.
“All coalition leaders, including Mian Nawaz Sharif and Asif Ali Zardari, would review the draft document before it is tabled in parliament in the form of an impeachment motion,” the minister maintained.
The final review meeting of the committee was held at the residence of Information Minister Sherry Rehman here on Sunday, in which Law Minister Farooq H Naek presented the charge-sheet after giving it legal shape.
The meeting was attended by Leader of the House in the Senate Mian Raza Rabbani, Law Minister Farooq H Naek, PPP spokesman Farhatullah Babar, Senator Ishaq Dar, PML-N Information Secretary Ahsan Iqbal and Sherry Rehman.
The committee had finalised the draft of the charge-sheet in its meeting on Friday and handed it over to Law Minister Farooq H Naek to give it legal shape before sending it to the heads of the ruling coalition.
According to sources, the committee in its charge-sheet has listed more than 30 charges against President Pervez Musharraf of constitutional violations and gross misconduct. Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Sherry Rehman said the draft has been finalised to send it to the heads of the ruling coalition for their approval within the next two days. “The committee took less than a week to finalise the draft. None of its points can be revealed without taking the respective coalition parliamentary parties into confidence,” she said.
About the possibility of the exercise of Article 6 of the Constitution against President Pervez Musharraf, the minister said the PPP never indulges in the politics of revenge because it wants a stable Pakistan and sustainable democracy in the country, as mandated by the masses on February 18.
“However, the decision to give a safe passage to the president is the discretion of the coalition leadership,” she added. Answering another question, Sherry said the democratic government had no contacts with the presidential camp, adding, “The president has the right to resign under Article 44 of the Constitution to avoid impeachment.î
Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, in a statement issued by his office, said the “time has come when the nation will decide its own destiny, as the people voted for a change in the country in the February elections.” Meanwhile, Defence Minister Ahmed Mukhtar said: “The charge-sheet will be presented in parliament by Tuesday.”
