Nawaz, Hashmi condemn killings
By our correspondent
ISLAMABAD: Four persons were killed and seven wounded in a gun battle between activists of two factions of PML — PML-Q and PLM-N — on Islamabad Highway near Karal Chowk Thursday.
The gun battle started near Khokhar House when a group of activists of PML-Q prevented the workers of PML-N from hanging welcome banners near the House. Two among the dead belonged to PML-N and two were servants of Taji Khokhar, real uncle of Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar (candidate of PML-Q).
Umar Khayam, 16, son of Ishrat Hussain resident of Pind Malkan, Imran Khan, 30, son of Aziz resident of Sihala, Shahid, 17 and 18-year-old Afzaal were among the dead. The injured were shifted to Poly Clinic, PIMS and Rawalpindi General Hospital.
Leader of PML-N Sardar Naseem while talking to newsmen said that a group of workers of PML-N were installing banners at Islamabad Highway, some 100 yards away from Khokhar House when an other group came out of Khokhar House and thrashed the PML-N workers. Meanwhile, a rally of PML-N reached that point. The people from Khokhar House started firing at the rally by taking positions from different points of the House that worsened the situation, he said.
The shootout continued for more than an hour while the traffic at Islamabad Highway, Airport Road and adjacent roads remained suspended for over three hours, which choked the traffic at all the main roads in Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Police have registered cases against both the groups and started investigations. Online/PPI add: The gunmen also took away dead bodies of three deceased along with them. Senior Superintendent Police (SSP) Islamabad Kaleem Imam, Additional Superintendent of Police Nasir Aftab and SP Investigation Mouin Masood reached and inspected the site.
SSP Islamabad Kaleem Imam and Deputy Police Officer (DPO) Saud Aziz were busy to ascertain the jurisdiction that whether it falls in Islamabad or Rawalpindi. Talking to Online, the SSP Islamabad confirmed the incident by saying there are four deaths and several injuries.
He vowed to take action against responsible without any fear and favour. Meanwhile, PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has strongly condemned the incident and expressed condolences to the victims’ families. He held the PML-Q responsible for the incident.
“People fired on our workers who were gathering for an election public rally,” he said this while talking to media persons. He made it clear that nefarious designs of his rival party would not weaken his determination and he would continue to address public gatherings.
Senior Vice President of PML-N Makhdoom Javed Hashmi has also strongly condemned the firing and deaths. Talking to newspersons here Javed Hashmi said: “We vehemently condemn the killing of four Muslim Leaguers and injuring seventeen others in firing.”
He held the government and PML-Q responsible for the killings and demanded immediate arrest of the killers. He said the PML-N would protest across the country on this hooliganism, which is an abortive attempt to prohibit the public rallies.
