KARACHI: Supreme Court of Pakistan Karachi Registry, while lauding the performance of Nazim Karachi, ordered for the removal of encroachments around the roads and asked the Sindh chief secretary to submit reports in the Court by holding weekly review meetings of the different departments in this regard.

The SC Bench constituting of the senior Judge, Justice Rana Bhagwan Das and Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi was hearing here the suo moto notice on the pestering city traffic jam.

Nazim Karachi, Mustafa Kamal in his testimony to the Court told that the traffic jam problem in the city exists at 55 places, out of which, 12 were located beyond his authority, while at 40 places this problem has been tackled by setting up traffic command and control system. He said that the traffic police was not under the control of the city government and he doesn’t have the authority to take action even against a constable.

The Bench in its remark told him to take up this matter with the government and submit proposals in this regard.

Nazim Karachi told that the city government was giving priority to the provision of those facilities, which the citizens were deprived of since long 59 years and these included revamping of the potable water supply and sewerage systems. This necessitates digging of roads, which creates traffic problem, but by doing so, we have provided potable water supply to those areas also, which were deprived of this basic necessity for decades. He lamented that in spite of that the City Nazim was being blamed and added that he was not a superman.

Justice Muhammad Nawaz Abbasi praising the work of City Nazim told him to keep on taking measures for the provision of further better facilities to the citizens and asked him to give special personal attention to the solution of these problems.

The Court then ordered the City Government, police and the traffic police to remove the encroachments in short-term and asked the Sindh chief secretary to hold weekly meetings of the different departments for long-term solutions of traffic and other problems and submit report to the Court.
