External hands behind unrest in Kurram Agency: MNA
Monday, September 01, 2008
PESHAWAR: Some external forces are involved in the current clashes in the Kurram Agency and elders of other tribal agencies should also come forward and play their role in maintaining peace in the area.

Talking to APP here on Sunday, Member National Assembly (MNA) from the Kurram Agency Sajid Husain Turi said: ìThe armed clashes in the Kurram Agency are not sectarian but some hidden external hands are involved in the conflict.î

The MNA said local tribesmen wanted peace in the agency but some invisible hands were foiling their efforts.

ìTwo suicide attacks occurred for the first time in the history of the agency, which shows that it was not sectarian clashes but some external hands were involved in disturbing the peace of the agency,î he added.

ìMiscreants and militants are the main factors for resurgence of violence in the Kurram Agency,î he added. It would have a very negative impact on other parts of the country if the situation was not improved in the Kurram Agency, Sajid Husain warned.

He said the local tribal elders could play a positive role in maintaining peace in the agency according to the tribal traditions but due to influence of militants, their role had become limited. ìLocal elders are forced to sit in their houses and cannot play their role due to fear of terrorists,î he added.

The MNA pointed out that inhabitants of the agency were facing great hardships due to closure of the Thall-Parachinar road for the last 10 months. ìThe entire agency is without electricity for the last one month, causing acute shortage of drinking water,î he added.

He demanded of the government to take concrete measures for the opening of the Thall-Parachinar road so that food items and medicines could be supplied to the area in the month of Ramazan.

The MNA said he held meetings with Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani, Co-chairman PPP Asif Ali Zardari and Adviser to Prime Minister on Interior Rahman Malik. They assured that special attention would be paid to bring durable peace in the agency. ìThe security forces should tighten security at the border to stop the militants from entering the Kurram Agency,î he suggested.
