Power generation to rise by 2,200MW in one year: PEPCO MD
Friday, May 23, 2008
LAHORE: In order to bridge the gap between electricity generation and consumption, the federal government has approved several power projects to be executed on fast track basis while additional 2,200 megawatts will be added to the national grid within one year.

Pakistan Electric Power Company (PEPCO) Managing Director Fazal Ahmed Khan stated this while speaking to the third senior management course delegation of the National Management College at the WAPDA House here on Thursday.

WAPDA Member (Finance) Chaudhry Abdul Qadeer and senior officers of the Authority and PEPCO were also present on the occasion.

The PEPCO MD said all resources were being tapped with a view to enhancing power generation capacity in the country. Dilating on various measures, he apprised the delegation that contracts for setting up 425MW Nandipur and 525MW Chichoki Mallian thermal power projects had already been signed.

The two projects, being executed in the public sector, are expected to be completed in 2010 and 2011 respectively. Besides, 1,800MW electricity would be added to the national grid through the private sector during 2008-10, he said.

Fazal Ahmed, giving a rundown of the performance of the power sector, said the PEPCO’s system losses were reduced to 20.6 per cent till the end of April, adding the PEPCO consumers were likely to reach 18 million by the end of June.

The MD said the WAPDA/PEPCO receivables had swelled to Rs187.753 billion including Rs72.060 billion owed by FATA and Rs38.775 billion by the KESC.

WAPDA General Manager (Technical Services) Dr Izhar-ul-Haq briefed the delegation about the hydropower and water sectors, saying Pakistan had the potential to generate more than 54,000MW low-cost hydropower.

The delegation was told that per capita water availability in the country dropped to an alarming level of 1,070 cubic metres in 2007. It was further told that the country had already lost storage capacity equivalent to 5.13 million acre feet due to silting in the reservoirs of Tarbela, Mangla and Chashma.
