Work together to combat pollution: Marri
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
Karachi

Collective and coordinated efforts are needed to combat environmental pollution and provide a cleaner and healthier atmosphere to future generations, Sindh Information Minister Shazia Marri said Tuesday. She was addressing the participants of a walk held to commemorate Earth Day. The walk started from People’s Secretariat and culminated at Jinnah’s mausoleum.

A large number of people, including schoolchildren, citizens, government officials and environmental activists, took part in the walk that was jointly organized by the Sindh Environment and Alternate Energy Department and the Sindh Environment Protection Agency (SEPA).

Participants carried banners inscribed with slogans for protecting the environment and for keeping the country cleaner and greener. Marri said that although industries and vehicles were major contributors towards environmental degradation, citizens were also responsible because they did not follow the rules for disposing domestic waste.

“Many people throw domestic garbage and litter on the streets, thus adding to environmental pollution,” Marri said. She called for creating awareness among children about environment-related issues.

She pledged that the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) government would amend laws regarding the environment and would also introduce environment as a subject at schools.

Marri praised officials, NGOs and schoolchildren for organising and attending the walk and urged them to continue making efforts “for a cleaner, greener and brighter Pakistan.”
