Sherry condemns ‘stoning to death’ incident
Monday, April 07, 2008
Islamabad

Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman has expressed deep concern and condemned in strongest terms the reported incident of ‘stoning to death’ of a couple in Mohmand Agency recently.

Commenting on the news reports that a man and a woman were abducted from Nowshera (NWFP) and executed by stoning to death in Mohmand Agency (FATA) at the orders of a so-called Qazi belonging to a section of militants and their bodies were thrown in a jungle, the minister said.

“I condemn in strongest terms the way the couple was put to death in barbaric, gruesome and uncivilized manner, as reported in the press.”

Sherry said, any person who violates and takes the law into his hands shall be punished in accordance with law and the government would not overlook any such unlawful act.

“The elected government gained a clear mandate from the people of Pakistan to create a civilized and humane society where the rights of the vulnerable sections of the society are protected,” Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Sherry Rehman.

She said that the government would take necessary action against the culprits so that they are punished according to law at the earliest.

“The law ministry has also taken note of this uncivilized incident and will take the required action.

“There is no room in Pakistan for people to take the law into their own hands. Taliban laws cannot be arbitrarily imposed and all citizens are entitled to justice under the law,” she added.
